A record forever – – SPANISH FOOTBALL

by: Adam Smith

Vlasic’s goal not only blew the patience of the 10,000 spectators who had decided to go to the RCDE Stadium to watch the final match of the group stage against CSKA Moscow (0-1). He also finished with a Espanyol record that will remain forever. After 26 straight matches in Europe without knowing the defeat, it came in the most inconsequential match of the group.

Because of the current competition format, it is very difficult for a team to overcome the Streak of Espanyol. The previous record was held by Ajax by Louis Van Gaal, who between 1994 and 1997 remained unbeaten consecutively for 21 matches. Espanyol continues from the UEFA move between 2006 and 2007 and the current competition. 15 matches of the edition in which Espanyol was runner-up and 11 of the current.

In these 26 engagements, Espanyol has had three coaches who will appear in the history of this record. Ernesto Valverde (15), David Gallego (8) and Pablo Machín (3), with whom he has broken a mark that can remain forever.
