The good results obtained are the basis of the extension of a contract that will expire in December 2022 (in case of World Cup qualifier in Qatar)
The Swiss Football Association (ASF) and national a coach Vladimir Petkovic will continue their successful collaboration. The two sides agreed on an early extension of the contract, which is currently in force until the end of Uefa Euro 2020. The new contract is basically valid until December 31, 2022.
Should Switzerland fail to qualify, after four participations in a row at a final stage of a tournament, as the first or second in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, the new coach’s contract would end at the end of 2021, at the end of March 2022 in the playoffs. Asf managers do not currently consider these scenarios. “With Vladimir Petkovic, the national team qualified for all the final stages of the major tournaments. He has continually rejuvenated the team, training it to a strong unity, able to continuously excite the population – underlines the central president Dominique Blanc –. Petkovic represents quality and continuity. We are convinced that we can write with him another chapter in the success story of Swiss football.”
Vladimir Petkovic is pleased with the continuation of his career with the National A: “I am very happy and proud to be able to continue to coach this great team that represents our country. We reorganized and professionalized transgaming.orgs as well as structurally to improve even more. It’s not a given that my players, the Association and the League give me such great confidence. I will do everything to repay them, Switzerland and our loyal fans for the trust placed in me.”
Significant points average
Petkovic took charge of the national team A in the summer of 2014 after being out in the round of 16 of the World Cup against Argentina. Under the guidance of the 56-year-old successor to Ottmar Hitzfeld, the Asf selection has since qualified for all the final stages. Switzerland participated with Petkovic at the Euro 2016 in France, the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the first edition of the Final Four tournament of the UEFA Nations League 2019 in Portugal. As the winner of the group she also managed to qualify for the final stage of Euro 2020. Petkovic has scored in 60 matches since making his debut for the National A at the beginning of September 2014, 34 wins and 12 draws with a goal difference of 114:52. The average of 1.9 points per game is the highest achieved by a Swiss national team coach since the 1920s. Switzerland and Petkovic have never fallen below 18th in the FIFA World Rankings, and have been in the top 10 for a long time.
“Vladimir Petkovic has done a convincing job. He has provided good results and has the highest points average achieved by a Swiss national team coach in the last 100 years,” comments Pierluigi Tami. “No one else knows the team like him. As director of the national teams, I am proud to be able to continue with him.”
