After Bayern Munich’s next big win in London, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge surprised with a message to Hansi Flick at the night banquet. The boss signalled to the coach that the club is ready to extend their cooperation beyond the end of the season after the German record holders’ 3-0 win in the Champions League game at Chelsea.
Rummenigge subsequently presented Flick with a 55th birthday gift after the quarter-final ticket booked in Munich before the return match on 18 March, with the telling words: “In the red packet is a pen. And with pens, you sometimes sign papers at Bayern Munich.”
After the unequivocal offer of a longer head coach job, the banquet hall was followed by a roar of noble fans and sponsors. Rummenigge flattered Flick at midnight with further warm words: “Keep it like this. Stay as you are. We are very, very happy with the way the team is playing, with the results and the Football, which it celebrates.”
Lewandowski involved in all hits
Flick had previously passed the ultimate aptitude test as Bayern coach in the 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge, where no German team had won until Tuesday night. “The team has implemented the requirements super,” he praised his players, who as a collective harmonized almost perfectly and had two matchwinners in the scorers Serge Gnabry (51st/54th) and Robert Lewandowski (76th), who was involved in all three goals.
“It’s always good to come back to London,” said former Arsenal pro Gnabry, who scored four goals in the group stage of Bayern’s thin 7-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur.
“You get the impression that when you come to London, you like us,” Rummenigge said. He listed the 2013 final win at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund, the Tottenham goal celebration and the current success. “It was very important to make a statement again,” commented captain Manuel Neuer – one to all competitors for the title in Europe’s top class.
Something big could succeed
“A 3-0 away result is of course a dream,” commented Thomas Müller: “This is how it is fun to be a supporter and player of FC Bayern.” The Ü30 players like Neuer and Müller, who were already present at the historic title triple in 2013, feel that seven years later, under the guidance of the much-respected coach Flick, something big could succeed again. One is “absolutely capable” of the Champions League triumph, Müller confidently proclaimed: “The 3-0 is only the consequence of our work in the last weeks and months.”
Rummenigge incited the team: “You have a great character, you saw that again tonight. And I think this great character will take you far if you continue in style.” (dpa)
