FC Schalke 04 missed the first R’ckschlag in the title race for the round-opener of the Bundesliga Borussia Mönchengladbach.

After the 2-0 (0-0) in the fast-paced top-flight game on Friday night, the team of coach David Wagner could now even intervene in the most exciting championship fight in years. With goals from national team player Suat Serdar (48th minute) and winter newcomer Michael Gregoritsch (58th), the Kunigsblauen moved past arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund in fourth place with 33 points.

“That’s how you get it and you want to get there,” Gregoritsch said on “ZDF.” The surprisingly strong Gladbachers were beaten with their own weapons by passionate Schalkern at the start of the 18th matchday: Frhes attacking, high running readiness and great aggressiveness in the two-fight.

“We are very disented. We are not good enough today, Schalke were clearly better,” Gladbach’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer told ZDF. “Too little penetration in the offensive” analyzes Jonas Hofmann, but warned against “talking everything badly now”.
