BVB and RB Leipzig compete the top duel on the 16th Bundesliga match day
Borussia Dortmund against RB Leipzig, or also: third against first. Hardly any more! It is the top duel on match day 16 in the Bundesliga. Before the showdown, guests are favorites. World football provides three reasons.
- RB has (real) strikers – BVB virtually none
RB Leipzig is fast, brave, filigree, strong in combination and strong in the current season. With 42 goals, the "Red Bulls" represent the best offensive line in the league. "On average, there are almost three goals, that's what sets us apart," said the man who is mainly responsible for it: Timo Werner.
International has scored 16 goals in 15 appearances and is therefore second in the list of goal scorers, only Robert Lewandowski (18) is ahead of him. But it's by no means a one-man show: Marcel Sabitzer has scored six times, and Emil Forsberg has also delivered four times in just eleven performances.
It is not necessarily the real nine, but the flexible and technically strong men who take care of the goals. The last example of variability in the RB game: Patrik Schick. In just one action in his debut goal against SC Paderborn, the Czech showed why the athletic leadership got him: he acted quickly, unpredictably and with big conclusions – and is a true nine.
This is exactly what BVB lacks, recently admitted club manager Hans-Joachim Watzke and coach Lucien Favre. Mainly because the only nominal point in the squad, Paco Alcácer, regularly suffers from ailments.
The fact that players like Marco Reus (nine goals), Jadon Sancho (eight) or even new signing Thorgan Hazard (four) jumps instead of the break also indicates variation – but only to a certain extent.
In the Champions League, but especially in the devastating 0: 4 in Munich, it became clear that, especially in tight matches, solutions were often lacking and without the nine, the high ball option was missing.
- RB Leipzig has a greater width in the squad than BVB
With the lack of a certain type of player you are automatically in the squad structure – and RB is also one step ahead. This is mainly due to coach Julian Nagelsmann, but also to Markus Krösche.
The new transgaming.orgs director created two clubs in the summer: Because before moving to Leipzig, he left a field with his club and the Bundesliga promoted SC Paderborn.
Although it is a global company behind RB, they have never spent the big money. Not this summer either. With € 47.5 million in clean expenses, they ranked fifth in the Bundesliga rankings. By comparison: BVB is second to Bavaria with 127.5 million.
Both teams have strengthened their squad widely, especially considering the triple load caused by the Champions League and DFB Cup. And it paid off in Leipzig's case.
The failure of top performers such as Emil Forsberg, Kevin Kampl or even Captain Willi Orban can be compensated for surprisingly easily. It was almost always a similar replacement. Also for the other regular defender Ibrahima Konaté, who could not yet play.
There was disagreement after the two Bundesliga defeats against Schalke (1: 3) and in Freiburg (1: 2). Even after 2-2 in the Champions League in Lyon, Nagelsmann was not happy with any players from the second row. So far this has only been a luxury problem.
The defense showed that BVB lacked breadth. Nico Schulz has so far not proved to be the hope of reinforcement, but Raphael Guerreiro has partially assumed his role, but it is planned in the midfield.
The blocking of Mats Hummels was also a problem, so Lukasz Piszczek had to move into the triple chain. He started out as a striker and has slid backwards throughout his career. It is hardly a position that the pole did not already have to play.
On the six, Axel Witsel and Thomas Delaney fell and lost two important pillars, which Julian Weigl cannot hide. Mahmoud Dahoud is hardly in demand this season and is already being treated as a possible departure.
- RB doesn't give up – and BVB has too many points!
High-performance transgaming.orgs, and therefore professional football, always take place in the head. Whether it should be called mentality, what BVB captain Marco Reus got in the palm of my hand is up to me. But dealing with setbacks and high phases always makes it possible to draw conclusions about a team's inner workings.
And RB Leipzig is also no match for any Bundesliga team in this area. Ten of their eleven trips brought them to the finish, and the only time they failed, it was still enough to draw (1-1 against Wolfsburg). With 8: 0 in Mainz, RB celebrated the highest victory in club history.
BVB, in turn, gambled away possible wins in three games in a row. On match day five, Borussia led 1-0 and 2-1 in Frankfurt. On game day six they were 2-1 in front against Werder Bremen, and on seven day in Freiburg it was just like against Frankfurt. In all cases, the final score was 2-2.
If you add these six playable points, Borussia Dortmund would have 35 points at the top of the table, two points ahead of RB Leipzig.
With a home win, BVB could actually go past RB. Perhaps the outsider role fits them, for the favorite is the guest in this top Bundesliga game.
