Nomination for the knockout phase
On the night of Monday to Tuesday, all 16 finalists had to submit their official squads to the European Football Union (UEFA) for the knockout round of the Champions League, which begins on 18 February. Since last season, the teams have also been allowed to nominate three players who have previously played for another club in the “King Class” or the Europa League. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, for example, had to watch in the knockout phase of the Europa League after his winter switch to Arsenal in 2018, because he had previously been playing for BVB in the Champions League.
In the meantime, transfers between participants in European competitions are much easier to reconcile with UEFA’s statutes. For example, FC Bayern’s new signing, Alvaro Odriozola, was able to nominate, even though he was already on the pitch with Real Madrid in the 3-1 win against FC Bruges. However, Fiete Arp (pictured) has to vacate his place in the squad – the German record holder continues to rely instead on the services of Arps U23 colleagues Sarpreet Singh and Oliver Batista Meier.
Meanwhile, Erling Haaland and Emre Can, who has not been nominated for the group stage at Juventus Turin, are backing Borussia Dortmund. Since in January, however, three players from the old squad were also handed over with Julian Weigl, Paco Alcucer and Jacob Bruun Larsen, the vacancies on the 25-man list were self-sufficient – luca Unhaun is also a fourth goalkeeper. For RB Leipzig, the third remaining German participant, the nomination went without much headache. The newcomers Dani Olmo, Angelio and the third goalkeeper Philipp Tschauner replace the departed Matheus Cunha, Marcelo Saracchi and Diego Demme.
The latter ousts Amin Younes from the squad at his new club SSC Naples. If the ex-national player still had a short assignment in the group stage, he was repeatedly associated with a departure to Mainz 05 during the winter break. A change did not come about, but due to three prominent newcomers, the offensive player has to vacate his place in the CL squad just like Kévin Malcuit and Faouzi Ghoulam. From a German point of view, however, there is still good news from Italy: Atalanta newcomer Lennart Czyborra can hope for his debut in the “King Class”.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain were not involved in a winter transfer. However, unlike in the group stage, Thomas Tuchel’s team does not use Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The former Bundesliga professional has not been in the Line of Series Champions in Ligue 1 and now has to vacate his place in the Champions League squad for third goalkeeper Marcin Bulka, who has only one appearance this season.
To explain: In addition to the above-mentioned lists of 25, the so-called “List A”, each club also has a “List B”. This may be updated before each match day, but it may only include players who were born on or after 1 January 1998 and who played for the club for two consecutive years between the 15th birthday and registration with UEFA. 16-year-olds should have spent the last two seasons at the club. At BVB, for example, Jadon Sancho has been on the “B-list” since the beginning of the season, as this will free up another place on the “A-list”.
