Liverpool have won their 235th Merseyside derby against Everton and moved into the FA Cup fourth round. The Reds struggled for a long time with a B-team without numerous performers before a dream goal by 18-year-old Curtis Jones in the 71st minute decided the contested game.
Jones, who has only played in the Premier League this season, pulled away from half-left about 18 yards from the Toffees’ goal just 20 minutes from the end and sunk the ball into the top right corner.
The reds’ only defensive down on Sunday, with team manager Jurgen Klopp spared numerous stars in recent weeks, was the injury to James Milner. The 34-year-old had to be replaced in the early stages with a muscle injury.
Sadio Mane, meanwhile, was only on the bench at Liverpool. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Roberto Firmino were not in the squad at all. Takumi Minamino, signed by Red Bull Salzburg, made his debut for the Reds.
FA Cup: Manchester City and Chelsea confident
Champions Manchester City had already taken the first step towards a successful FA Cup title defence on Saturday. Team manager Pep Guardiola’s team defeated fourth-tier Side Port Vale 4-1 (2-1) at home.
City rivals Manchester United, on the other hand, have to worry about making it into the round of 32. The 12-time champion did not go beyond a 0-0 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers and will have to play for a replay at Old Trafford. The same applies to The Spurs, coached by Jose Mourinho. Tottenham did not get beyond a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough on Sunday.
Bayern Munich’s Champions League opponents FC Chelsea are one step further. Without Antonio Rüdiger, Chelsea defeated second-tier Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Sunday.
