Liverpool avoided the second winless game of the current Premier League season. Against West Ham United, Liverpool won 3-2 (1-1). Georginio Wijnaldum (9th minute), Mohamed Salah (68th) and Sadio Mané (81st) scored for the leader, Issa Diop (12th) and Pablo Fornals scored for West Ham (54th). Four wins from the remaining 11 games still separate Liverpool from the safe championship.
Two head balls went 1-1 in the early stages. First Wijnaldum took the lead after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s flank (9th), then Diop equalized after a corner (12th). Liverpool remained the most dominant team, but had only two shots on goal in the first half.
West Ham came out of the break better. The visitors were stuck in Liverpool’s penalty area, and after a flat effort from the right, Fornals scored from about 10 yards to make it 2-1 for West Ham (54′). Liverpool then took advantage of an error by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski on the equaliser. Salah shot at goal, Fabianski kneels to retrieve the ball, but lets it slip into the legs (68th). The winning goal came in the final stages: Alexander-Arnold handed to the left post of the baseline and Mané hit the empty goal to make it 3-2.
It was the 18th consecutive league win, with only Manchester City having the same streak in the 2017/2018 season. That leaves Liverpool’s only winless game of the season so far this season, with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United in mid-October. Liverpool have now won 21 home games this season, setting the 1972 English record set by Liverpool under coach Bill Shankly.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are 22 points clear of Manchester City.
Liverpool lost the quarter-final match against Atlético Madrid 0-1 during the week and the return leg will take place on 11 March.
