It is the most expensive transfer in Bundesliga history: Lucas Hernandez (23)!
The central defender joined Bayern from Atlético Madrid in the summer for €80m. Despite an internal ligament injury, knee surgery and the associated risk, the Munich-based club bought the world champion.
The Frenchman has made 682 mandatory minutes so far for the record holder, but he has not yet shown his 80 million class. Again, the injury scare caught up with him, missing 17 mandatory games Hernandez. He is currently on the verge of returning to the squad after a ligament tear in his right ankle.
The question now is: did Bavaria get the wrong Hernandez brother?
While Lucas is in rehab and the first units with the team, his younger brother Theo (22) scores goals and is a bargain. The left-back joined AC Milan from Real Madrid in the summer for a sizable €20m deal. He scored six goals in 19 appearances, making him the Rossoneri’s top scorer at the moment. He set up two goals in the league.
Theo was also injured in the summer, in the friendly against FC Bayern he suffered a capsule tear in his ankle. He returned in mid-September and has been convincing ever since. The “Gazzetta dello Sport” writes about him: “Hernandez, born to surprise! The real transfer coup of Milan. It’s worth 20 million.”
Curious: As a child, Theo was considered the more talented, invited by Atlético to rehearsal training. It was only by chance that Lucas was discovered.
The brothers are almost like twins: Lucas is one and a half years older, two centimetres smaller and world champion. His main position is the interior defence, where he is also scheduled at Bayern. He plays on the left side of the national team. This is also Theo’s side, here he plays for Milan and makes powerful steam offensively over left with Hakan Calhanoglu (25/four goals of the season). With Real Madrid, Theo became Champions League winners.
Both have moved to their clubs in the summer, leaving Spain and signing until 2024. They also share the player advisor, are not only brothers but also best friends.
Theo revealed in SPORT BILD: “We talk to each other every day, see each other on Facetime. When we are injured, we take courage and push ourselves.”
This support is good for Lucas, like That of Mama Laurence. She commutes between Munich, Milan and her hometown of Madrid. She often cheers with Theo at the San Siro Stadium and suffers with Lucas in rehab.
That will soon change, as Lucas is about to return to the Bayern squad with Hansi Flick (54). Then it can also be National coach Didier Deschamps (51) show that he is still the number one left defender position for Euro 2020. The French coach has there a huge selection (among others Benjamin Mendy, Ferland Mendy, Lucas Digne) – he will not have hidden Theo’s high-flying in Italy.
At the latest in the direct French duel, it will become clear who is the better Hernandez…
