Chicharito’s signing for the Los Angeles Galaxy to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has returned to Milan, has created some unease among Guadalajara fans who hoped the Mexican attacker would opt for the team where he started his professional career. The criticism that the former Sevilla forward has received has surprised Matthias Almeyda, former ly slam from Chivas and currently in MLS, in San Jose.
“It happens like in Argentina, we have Leo Messi and many criticize him. I wonder: why aren’t we happy with what we have?” the technician said. ALmeyda did not hesitate to claim that “Let us be thanked that they are in our countries, that they were born, that they represent our country and that they have carried the flag to the top.”
Almeyda has also acknowledged that when he was at the helm of the Chivas he tried, before the World Cup in Russia, to re-enlist the Chicharito for the minutes he was not having at the time. “Circumstances were given. I thought it was a good time for him to return to Mexican football and accumulate minutes for the World Cup. The decision was his, but the player preferred to continue in Europe. We intend to get it back,” he confirms now.
