The origin of the “Gift Box Day” is not entirely clear. There is said to have been a day in Ancient Rome in December when slaves and their masters exchanged roles. Later, the tradition of staff getting gifts from their employers on December 26th probably arose.

Boxing Day in the Premier League: Dates
A total of nine matches will be played on Thursday, with only defending champions Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers not taking action until 27 December.
Tottenham Hotspur will start against Brighton and Hove Albion, followed by six simultaneous games at 4pm. Manchester United play Newcastle at home in the evening, with the top-flight match between Leicester City and Liverpool at the end of the day

Boxing Day on TV and livestream
All Boxing Day matches will be played on Sky Transfer. The pay-TV channel shows the games from 4 p.m. in a big conference, the remaining three games before and then in full length individually.
