Liverpool FC: Why is there a catch-up game?
From the point of view of Liverpool FC, there is a nice background behind the special date. The match against West Ham United was scheduled for the weekend of 21 December. At that time, however, the defending Champions League winner was in Qatar to play in the Club World Cup.
There the Reds won the cup in the final against Flamengo Rio de Janeiro in extra time. Ex-Hoffenheimer Roberto Firmino scored the day’s goal.
Liverpool still unbeaten in the Premier League
Coach Jurgen Klopp’s team is playing an incredible season in the English league. After 23 games, the LFC has 22 wins and a draw. Second-seeded Manchester City already have a 16-point lead, although the Skyblues have one more game on their own.
Last weekend, however, there was a small shock absorber for the Reds. Against third-place Shrewsbury Town, Liverpool did not go beyond a 2-2 lead after a 2-0 lead and must therefore go into a replay. However, the traditional club will not dispute this with the first team.
Klopp has announced that the return match at Anfield will be dominated by under-23 players to give his players a break. Background: The match will take place on February 4 or 5 during the winter break.
“The Premier League has asked us to respect the winter break. That’s what we do. If the FA does not respect this, we cannot change it. We won’t be there,” Klopp said angrily after the 2-2 draw.
