Union Berlin loses to Hoffenheim – TOP STORIES

by: Adam Smith

The fortress of Köpenick has been conquered: the recently-so-strong Bundesliga star Union Berlin has lost again in the old forest after an impressive number of successes. After four home wins before the team lost by coach Urs Fischer to the strong TSG Hoffenheim 0: 2 (0: 0). Despite the season's fourth defeat at their own stadium, Union can celebrate Christmas far from the relegation zone.

Leaders Ihlas Bebou (56th) and Christoph Baumgartner (90th) shot Hoffenheim to their first win after four games without success. Union stands at a strong 20 points after the most successful year in the club's history, culminating in promotion to the first league and could finish in 2019 on Sunday (3:30 am) at the end of the first round at Fortuna Düsseldorf. The Hoffenheim team finishes their series on Friday (20:30) against runner Borussia Dortmund.

In front of 20 350 spectators in the Alte Försterei, who were not sold out for the first time during their Bundesliga association, the host followed them first. The toxic newcomer handed the majority of the game shares to the more technically minded Hoffenheimers and decided on a solid defense. Köpenickers became especially dangerous because of standard situations – Robert Andrich (8th) shot over a corner after a corner kick and missed the first better opportunity.

Play heated after the break

As a result, Union repeatedly involved Hoffenheim in duels, Kraichgauer having difficulty getting into the opponent's box at all. The defense of the climber around Florian Hübner, who fought against a brother-in-law with Hoffenheim Benjamin Hübner, resolved difficult situations in the beginning robustly and sought his salvation in quick counter-attacks.

That Anthony Ujah (13th) did not process one according to Marcus Ingvartsen for the lead was due only to a technical error: The Nigerian did not hit the ball right in front of goal. Hoffenheim only got ahead of the Köpenicker goal better at the end of the first half, but then there was a fire hazard. Just before the break, TSG keeper Andrej Kramaric appeared freely in front of Union goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz and spun the ball from around 13 yards above goal.

After the break, the meeting became more heated, the ball dueling harder, but Hoffenheim continued to push through his game. Unlike in the first place, Alfred Schreuder's team now came more convincingly in front of the Union goal.

The visitors' playful superiority eventually took advantage of Bebou, who withdrew from the 20 meter and half right position, his shot being deflected by Union Christopher Lenz.

After the deficit, the Union did not give in and ran fast. Sebastian Andersson failed at the best opportunity freestanding from eight yards to Oliver Baumann. Just before the end, Baumgartner made the decision.
