Who won EURO as a player and as a coach?
Only one person has won the UEFA European Championship as a player and as a coach: Berti Vogts.
The former Borussia Munchengladbach defender won the tournament with West Germany in 1972, although he never made it. After retiring, Vogts coached his national team and took second place at the 1992 European Championships. Four years later he had better luck, beating the Czech Republic in the final.
Who could join the club at EURO 2020?
Among the coaches who will participate in UEFA EURO 2020 are two former European champions:
Didier Deschamps (France)
He was captain of France at UEFA EURO 2000, as well as the third person to win the FIFA World Cup as a player (France 1998) and coach (Russia 2018). Like Vogts, he led the national team to the final to his first European Championship (2016): will he be able to emulate the German at the second attempt?
Ronald Koeman (Netherlands)
Koeman led Holland’s defence in the euro ’88 final. In 2018 he began coaching the tulips, reaching the final of the UEFA Nations League in 2019.
Which EURO 2020 coaches have come close to winning as a player?
Roberto Mancini and Gareth Southgate came close to triumph. The Azzurri were eliminated by the Soviet Union in the semi-finals in 1988, while England fell in the same round at EURO ’96 after an error from Southgate’s puck against – guess what? – The Germany of Vogts.
